The Town of Batesburg-Leesville has contracted with the County of Lexington to provide animal services within the town limits of Batesburg-Leesville. Lexington County Animal Services will pick up stray animals and take them to their shelter in Lexington. The Town of Batesburg-Leesville and Lexington County Animal Services work together to enforce the County Animal Control Ordinance, which the Town has adopted. The ordinance requires that all cats and dogs be properly restrained at all times.
Lexington County Animal Services only handles calls relating to dogs. For situations involving reptiles, rodents, or other types of animals creating a nuisance, please contact a specialized company to assist in wildlife removal. Lexington County adopted a Community Cat program to address the the cat population.
Lexington County has an animal control officer on call around the clock. However, due to the size of the county, the officers do not respond after hours to pick up stray animals and can only respond to emergency calls after normal business hours and on the weekends.
The calls that are considered emergency calls are:
- injured animals
- animal attacks, or
- other public safety organizations requesting assistance.
